New technology allows part data to be captured over the course of several hours instead of days.
DEFOREST, Wis. – June 26, 2014 – Continuing its efforts to provide the newest innovations in the field of metrology and precision molding, EVCO Plastics, a leading custom plastics manufacturer, has expanded the offerings of its metrology lab to include a Romer CMM laser scanning arm. This technology will allow EVCO to provide customers improved speed and efficiency in collecting information for part layouts, as well as greater precision for creating high-performance plastic parts.
The Romer Arm uses an integrated laser scanning system capable of scans at a rate of 50,000 points per second to create a 3D point cloud on the surface of a part for a cloud-to-model comparison. The comparison can be evaluated through screen captures showing either localized deviation tags or a complete part color mapping. The 3D-scanned points contain the X, Y, Z, I, J, K values from the surface, which can aid reverse engineering by creating a 3D model of the part.
“The laser scanning arm is a great value add to customers, as it will substantially increase the speed of product development,” said Rich Duval, director of quality and human resources at EVCO Plastics. “We’ll now be able to capture part data over the course of several hours instead of days, making processes more accurate and efficient.”
With the addition of the CMM laser scanning arm, EVCO’s metrology team will be able to assist customers on large part comparisons from the scanned models to the 3D files. EVCO specializes in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing to validate parts to print, and the teams’ in-depth knowledge will aid in the final print callouts during planning.
Adding new technology to the EVCO Plastics lineup has allowed the plastics manufacturer to provide customers with the most up-to-date capabilities. It also provides them the equipment to effectively and accurately communicate to mold builders and engineers how a part differs from the blueprint or model. Determining these nuances early allows for the appropriate accommodations to be made in order to get the product to market in its best possible form.
